Libertarianism Is Incompatible With Modern Poltics
We don't fit with the left. And we don't fit with the right.
I present the perfect description of the fundamental problem with modern liberalism.
Beyond the insight into the left, it is also pertinent to the future of libertarianism.
Libertarianism has traditionally been associated with the right due to their shared loyalty to the free market, but this connection is now tenuous because of MAGA. Libertarians want open immigration, MAGA wants very little immigration. Libertarians want free trade, MAGA wants tariffs. Libertarians want free speech, MAGA wants free speech for me, not for thee.
Unfortunately, the left is also no libertarian safe haven, and that’s not just because of the obvious issue that many leftists are not fans of the free market. It’s because of what Dissproportionately is talking about in her tweet. The left is skeptical of individualism, the idea that you are ultimately responsible for your life. That is the core of libertarianism.
None of this is to say that the right is a fan of this narrative either, hence the MAGA grievance politics.
So, we libertarians are stuck, and there’s no easy way out. Libertarianism has very little support for a reason: people don’t like what we’re selling. Maybe better messaging can help a bit, but I think the real turning point will be when things start going south. Libertarianism is most attractive when times are bad.
I’ll finish with this: coding politics is extremely stupid in general, and we should stop doing it for the good of everyone.
